Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), established in 1962, is Mozambique’s oldest and largest public university and a leading centre for higher education, research, and innovation in the country. It serves as a multidisciplinary institution supporting training, research, and knowledge development across a wide range of scientific and socio-economic fields.

Within this broad academic framework, UEM hosts specialized research initiatives such as the Research Chair on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Arid and Semi-Arid Zones (ESORCCAS), which focuses on addressing climate change and environmental challenges in vulnerable regions. The associated ADAPTAcoMOZ platform acts as a bridge between scientific research and practical implementation, translating research findings into policies and community-based programmes.

The unit adopts a multidisciplinary approach that integrates environmental science, ecology, and socio-economic analysis to develop sustainable adaptation strategies. Its work includes analysing climate risks, promoting ecosystem-based solutions, and supporting communities in building resilience to climate variability and extreme events.

UEM is also actively involved in broader environmental and climate-related research, including biodiversity conservation, marine and coastal resource management, and social-ecological systems. These efforts are often carried out through collaboration between faculties such as natural sciences and social sciences, as well as partnerships with international research institutions.

Through its research, training programmes, and partnerships, UEM plays a critical role in advancing climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and evidence-based policy development in Mozambique and the wider Southern African region.
