The School of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is a key academic and research unit within the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. It plays a central role in addressing environmental and sustainability challenges in South Africa and beyond. The School’s work is grounded in interdisciplinary research that integrates ecological science, conservation biology, and sustainable development principles.

The School focuses on understanding ecosystems, biodiversity, and the interactions between humans and the natural environment. Research areas include climate change impacts, ecological resilience, conservation of wildlife and plant species, and sustainable land-use practices. The unit also contributes to climate-smart agriculture and food security by studying plant-environment interactions, including drought, heat, and soil health dynamics.

In addition to research, the School offers academic programmes that equip students with scientific and practical skills in environmental management, conservation, and sustainability. Through field-based learning, laboratory work, and collaboration with external stakeholders, students gain hands-on experience in addressing real-world environmental problems.

The School is actively engaged in community outreach and policy-relevant research, supporting local and national efforts to promote sustainable development and environmental stewardship. By combining innovation, education, and applied research, it contributes to building resilient ecosystems and communities in the face of climate change and environmental pressures.
