Key Focus Areas

  • Seismic Engineering & Earthquake Risk: Primary expertise in Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics, and Engineering Seismology to reduce seismic vulnerability in Algeria and across Africa.

  • Built Environment Resilience: Researching building materials, vulnerability evaluation, and the preservation of cultural heritage against natural hazards.

  • Government & International Consultancy: Serving as a technical advisor for the Algerian government and international organizations like UNICEF on DRR progress and policy.

  • Policy Lobbying: Actively advocating for greater national and international focus on disaster risk reduction initiatives.

  • Professional Capacity Building: Providing specialized training for architects and engineers on earthquake-resistant design and seismic risk reduction strategies.

  • Cross-Sectoral DRR Training: Extending disaster risk knowledge to diverse groups, including journalists (introduction to DRR concepts) and Civil Protection students (specialized postgraduate training).

  • Advanced Geospatial Tools: Training practitioners in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specifically for disaster risk reduction applications.

    • Master’s Programme in Disaster Risk Management

    • Master’s Programme in Earthquake Engineering

  • Regional Outreach: Conducting workshops on assessing seismic vulnerability in multiple African countries to strengthen continental disaster resilience.

USTHB is home to the Built Environment Research Laboratory (LBE), founded in 2000. The LBE operates in the context of numerous national and international projects, with a specific research focus on Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Engineering Seismology, Building Materials, Disaster Management, Vulnerability Evaluation and Preservation of Cultural Heritage. The mission of the LBE unit is to conduct research on earthquake risk reduction, building the capacity of practitioners to address seismic risk and serve as a source of consult for the Algerian government and abroad. Currently, the LBE comprises four teams and incorporates 25 researchers (from within USTHB and outside), six with PhDs. The LBE is also active in lobbying for a greater focus on disaster risk reduction initiatives in the country and abroad.

Other activities of the unit include conducting several workshops on assessing seismic vulnerability in several African countries and research on state of risk reduction for UNICEF.
