The Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC) at the University of the Free State is a specialised academic and research centre within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Established in the early 2000s and becoming an independent centre in 2005, it has grown into one of the leading disaster management training institutions in Africa.
DiMTEC focuses on advancing disaster risk reduction and resilience-building through a combination of postgraduate education, research, and professional training. It offers programmes at postgraduate diploma, master’s, and doctoral levels, alongside short learning programmes tailored to industry and public sector needs. These programmes equip professionals with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to manage natural and human-induced disasters effectively.
The centre adopts a multidisciplinary approach, integrating environmental, social, economic, and policy perspectives to address complex disaster risks. Its research and consultancy work support the development of strategies aligned with national, regional, and international frameworks, including those of the United Nations.
DiMTEC also collaborates extensively with international organisations, NGOs, and academic institutions, contributing to global knowledge exchange and capacity building in disaster risk management. Through these partnerships, the centre plays a critical role in shaping policy, improving preparedness, and strengthening resilience in vulnerable communities across Africa.
Overall, DiMTEC serves as a centre of excellence in disaster management education and research, producing skilled professionals and generating knowledge that supports sustainable development and disaster resilience on the continent.
